Research Projects

Creative Thinking Assessment for PISA 2021. I worked as an Assessment Consultant for the Program of International Student Assessment (PISA, see http://www.oecd.org/pisa/) at OECD for designing assessment for measuring Creative Thinking in 72 countries in 2021. My work in this project included: 1) contributing to defining the different domains of creativity that will be included in the assessment (e.g. creative writing, design, problem-solving); 2) proposing ideas for possible tasks in each domain (each requiring around 20 minutes of testing time); 3) exploring possible indicators of creativity that can be produced in an automated way through log-file data; 4) suggesting elements of scoring criteria and rubrics for human rating of the students' work on the task. I worked with a group of experts from around the world including Dr. Valeire Shute (my Ph.D. advisor) on this project.

Physics Playground (IES Cognitive and Affective Learning Support). I am working with Dr. Valerie Shute, Dr. Sidney D'Mello, and Dr. Ryan Baker on an IES funded (Institute of Education Sciences) project called Exploring adaptive cognitive and affective learning support for next-generation STEM learning games. The IES project examines affective supports (e.g., motivational messages, attention redirection) relative to their influence on learning and interest in science. The project started in 2017 and will continue until 2021.

Physics Playground (NFS Cyberlearning). I am currently working with Dr. Valerie Shute, Dr. Fengfeng Ke, and Dr. Russel Almond on an NSF funded project called Game-based Assessment and Support of STEM-related Competencies. We will enhance the game called Physics Playground (made by Dr. Shute and her team) by creating new levels, adding more instructional supports, and making the game adaptive to the players. We also will add new in-game-assessment (or stealth assessment) into the game to measure STEM-related knowledge and skills. The project started in 2016 and will continue until 2019.
